Carlton Nivens

I am a student programs instructor who started working with Code VA part-time while I was going through college at VCU. While working here, I discovered a passion for working with students and decided to dedicate myself full-time to providing students with opportunities that allow them to be creative and discover what role they want computer science to play in their lives.

Jen Hicks

Jennifer spent 30 years in public education. She taught Kg, 1st and 4th grade for 9 years in Richmond City and Henrico County and spent 21 years as an Instructional Technology Resource Teacher in Henrico and Hanover Counties. As an ITRT, she provided professional development for K-12 teachers and helped integrate technology at the elementary level.

She served on the VDOE’s steering committee for the Digital Learning Integration Standards of Learning in 2020. After retiring in 2022, she joined CodeVA as an instructor. She loves helping students learn how to code and enjoys creating coding and STEAM activities. Jennifer has served as the Community Partnerships Coordinator and is currently the Educator Programs Operations Specialist at CodeVA.

Shon Bennett

Shon (he/him) is an enthusiastic computer science instructor who also happens to have a knack for creative expression. He loves exposing young learners to arts and crafts that simplify complex concepts he has learned while studying Computer Science at Virginia Commonwealth University and while working in industry as an iOS developer. Shon believes there is an immense amount of value in being able to build awesome technical solutions, but what does one gain from keeping this knowledge to themselves? Shon endeavors to bridge the gap between theory and application for young learners, and help shape them into individuals who will go on to impact the field of computer science.
